Mentorship Program

This year we will start a mentorship program for the members within BEA.

Goals

• Support and encourage for students to complete the science curriculum.

• Develop effective mentoring relationships.

• Enhance recruitment, retention, and academic development of minority undergraduates.

• Increase the academic participation and career success of undergraduate minorities in the sciences.

• Provide information to undergraduate minorities about their major.

• Give undergraduate and graduate students an opportunity to develop a professional network.

• Enhance the academic climate for undergraduate minorities in the sciences.

 

Upper classmen will be paired with underclassmen of the same or similar major.

Upper classmen will be paired with a graduate student of the same major.

Bi-weekly group meetings:
-Contact between pairs must take place at least once a week.
-The topic of the meeting does not have to revolve around school.
-One big event for mentees/mentors at the end of the year (amusement park, retreat, etc.)

PCI - Emerson Junior High School

Tutoring at Emerson Middle School

This is BEA’s second year working with the school. The kids really like having us there and they need positive individuals to aspire to (come on this is Davis. Black people are pretty much non-existent).

This quarter, tutoring sessions in math and science will be from 330pm-430pm.

On Wednesdays Black Student Union meets from 12-1pm.

They also want us there to help with events. They want us to help with their black history month program again.

PCI - Fairfield

Laduan will be doing outreach for a school in Fairfield starting on Jan.30. He will leave Davis at 11:30 am to get there by 12pm.

He is trying to establish a tutor/mentor program out there too… Doin it BIG for the next generation.

This will turn into a once a month type of thing.

SODA

BEA is affiliated with SODA (Students of Diverse Associations).

SODA is basically an organization that tries to encourage people from different backgrounds and cultures to come together. Laduan is our rep.

They will be putting on a program that deals with images in the media. I’m sure we have plenty to say about that.
